Saint Katharine Drexel Parish

Saint Katharine Drexel Parish

The Saint Katharine Drexel Family, guided by the Holy Spirit, commits itself to reaching out and sharing the love and service modeled by our patroness. The Eucharist will be our source of strength. Through prayer and action, we will serve God, our Lord and Savior, and our community, exhibiting a special concern for the poor, oppressed and marginalized of our society, especially those among the African-American and Native-American peoples.

Our parish was established by Bishop William H. Keeler on the feast of Blessed Kateri Tekawitha, July 14, 1988. The first Mass was celebrated on July 31, 1988 in Silver Spring Fire Hall. During the first three years, Mass was celebrated at the fire hall and at Saint Timothy Lutheran Church.

Mother Katharine Drexel was beatified on November 20, 1988. The following day, Pope John Paul II named the parish Blessed Katharine Drexel Parish. It is the first parish in the world dedicated in honor of her.

Ground was broken on Father's Day in 1990 for the church building. The first Mass in the new facility was on May 4, 1991 for First Communion. The church was dedicated on September 8, 1991 by Bishop Nicholas Dattilo.

On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Blessed Katharine Drexel. The name of the church was then changed to Saint Katharine Drexel at a Mass of celebration the following Sunday.
